Top 10 Tuesday — We Want Justice!

24 Apr

This week the Top 10 Tuesday prompt is frequently used word in the titles of  ____ genre. Well, I quickly scanned my favorite, mystery/suspense, and found that authors do indeed use a few words over and over in their titles. Fatal, Death (not including variations), Murder, and Justice seemed to be the favorites. On this blog alone I’ve reviewed 6 Fatal books, 12 Death books, 20 Murder books, and 9 Justice books (with 3 waiting in the TBR pile!). In an effort to bring a positive spin to this Deadly (7 books!) topic, I went with Justice because though elusive, it is the ultimate goal of the heroes and heroines that inhabit the novels.

Be sure to visit That Artsy Reader Girl to find out what other words frequent bloggers must-read lists.

Book Review: Scorned Justice

3 Apr

Scorned-Justice-197x300Texas Ranger Brody Calhoun is with his parents in west Texas when an unexpected attack injures the brother of Rebecca Morgan, Brody’s high school sweetheart. The local sheriff, a good friend, asks for Brody’s help. At first, it seems an open-and-shut case.

As Brody digs deeper, he realizes the attack may be related to an organized crime trial Rebecca will be overseeing. With Rebecca’s help, he compiles evidence involving cattle rustling, bribery and dirty payoffs that shatter the entire community and put Rebecca directly in the line of fire.

Brody expects to protect her. What he never expects is to fall for Rebecca all over again, or for a murder to throw the case wide open. Is Brody’s faith strong enough to withstand not only deep-rooted corruption and cattle rustling but also love?

My Impressions:

Wow, what a wild ride! If you like page-turning, twist-galore suspense, then Scorned Justice is for you. The newest book in Margaret Daly’s Men of The Texas Rangers series, Scorned Justice can be read as a standalone novel. Set in San Antonio and the surrounding area, the novel offers a twisting plot and a sweet romance. I highly recommend this book.

Rebecca Morgan is the judge on an important trial featuring the Russian mafia and an Hispanic gang. Harassment of jury members has caused one mistrial and the unsettling harassment and attacks that plague Rebecca and those close to her may trigger yet another. Rebecca is determined to control this trial despite the increasing violence. But following the end of the case, Rebecca is still a target and her longtime friend (a love interest), Brody Calhoun, a Texas Ranger, is determined to get to the bottom of the case.

Scorned Justice has just about everything a fan of suspense could want — life threatening attacks, car bombs, murders and kidnapping. It also has some surprises in store for its readers. I didn’t see the ending coming, and that just added to my enjoyment. This is a book I just could not put down. The romance was good too! It is always great to see the development of characters from cautious to seizing the life God has in store.

Highly Recommended.

Book Review: Shattered Silence

18 Oct

A serial killer is targeting illegal aliens in southern Texas. Texas Ranger Cody Jackson is paired with a local police officer, Liliana Rodriguez, to investigate the murders.

While the case brings Cody and Liliana ever closer, the tension between Americans and Mexican Americans heightens. Fighting their attraction, Cody and Liliana race to discover who is behind the murders and bring peace to the area. What they uncover isn’t what they expected. Will Cody and Liliana’s faith and love be strong enough to survive the storm of violence?

Her latest book is the Christian fiction suspense Shattered Silence, about a series of murders that seem like a hate crime, but things aren’t what they appear.

My Impressions:

A serial killer, a battered wife, a defiant teenager and a smuggling ring — Detective Liliana Rodriguez of the Durango police and Texas Ranger Cody Jackson have their hands full! In Margaret Daly’s newest novel, Shattered Silence, you have all that and more. Fast paced with twists and turns and unforeseen developments, this book will satisfy those who love the romantic suspense genre.

I really liked Daly’s characters, even or maybe especially those who were in supporting roles. They were flawed and struggling to do what’s right. Yet they had a hope and a determination that made the story bring out the positives in man’s behavior against the backdrop of evil and darkness. A message of faith was woven throughout the story, but was never preachy. I think any reader of romantic suspense, Christian or not, would enjoy this book.

The second installment in The Men of The Texas Rangers series, Shattered Silence can be read as a standalone. I like series like this one where settings and themes are continued, but not dependent on other books for the reader to enjoy them.  All in all I would recommend Shattered Silence.

Recommended.
