If You Liked Beneath The Surface . . .

31 Aug

My book club read the first book in Lynn H. Blackburn‘s new romantic suspense series, Beneath The Surface. The consensus was we liked it. Book 2, In Too Deep, releases in October, and some of our members have already put in a pre-order. If you read it and liked it and need something to tide you over until October 😉 , here are a few recommendations.

Dark Deception by Nancy Mehl

Kate O’Brien’s quiet life in small-town Shelter Cove, Arkansas is shaken when her past suddenly comes roaring back to life. Four years ago, she and her twin sister were attacked by an elusive serial killer. Only Kate survived, and she’s been in witness protection ever since.

When new evidence arises to suggest the convicted man wasn’t the murderer, she’s subpoenaed to testify in the new trial. Afraid to go back into that world, Kate only agrees if Tony DeLuca, the deputy Marshal who protected her during the original trial, escorts her to St. Louis.

Deadly Proof by Rachel Dylan

In the biggest case of her career, attorney Kate Sullivan is tapped as lead counsel to take on Mason Pharmaceutical because of a corporate cover-up related to its newest drug. After a whistleblower dies, Kate knows the stakes are much higher than her other lawsuits.

Former Army Ranger turned private investigator Landon James is still haunted by mistakes made while serving overseas. Trying to forget the past, he is hired by Kate to look into the whistleblower’s allegation and soon suspects that the company may be engaging in a dangerous game for profit. He also soon finds himself falling for this passionate and earnest young lawyer.

Determined not to make the same mistakes, he’s intent on keeping Kate safe, but as the case deepens, it appears someone is willing to risk everything — even murder — to keep the case from going to trial.

Shadows of The Past by Patricia Bradley

Psychology professor and criminal profiler Taylor Martin prides herself on being able to solve any crime, except the one she wants most desperately to solve – the disappearance of her father twenty years ago. When she finally has a lead on his whereabouts, Taylor returns home to Logan Point, Mississippi, to investigate. But as she is stalking the truth about the past, someone is stalking her.

Nick Sinclair pens mystery novels for a living, but the biggest mystery to him is how he can ever get over the death of his wife–a tragedy he believes he could have prevented. With his estranged brother the only family he has left, Nick sets out to find him. But when he crosses paths with Taylor, all he seems to find is trouble.

August Book Club Selection — Beneath The Surface

1 Aug

I am excited to introduce a new-to-us author to my book club this month. We will be discussing Beneath The Surface by Lynn H. Blackburn. As romantic suspense is a favorite genre with my group, I am eager to hear what they think. We’d love for you to join us. Have you read this book? What did you think?

After a harrowing experience with an obsessed patient, oncology nurse practitioner Leigh Weston needed a change. She thought she’d left her troubles behind when she moved home to Carrington, North Carolina, and took a job in the emergency department of the local hospital. But when someone tampers with her brakes, she fears the past has chased her into the present. She reaches out to her high school friend turned homicide investigator, Ryan Parker, for help.

Ryan finds satisfaction in his career, but his favorite way to use his skills is as a volunteer underwater investigator with the Carrington County Sheriff’s Office dive team. When the body of a wealthy businessman is discovered in Lake Porter, the investigation uncovers a possible serial killer — one with a terrifying connection to Leigh Weston and deadly implications for them all.

Lynn H. Blackburn believes in the power of stories, especially those that remind us that true love exists, a gift from the Truest Love. She’s passionate about CrossFit, coffee, and chocolate (don’t make her choose) and experimenting with recipes that feed both body and soul. She lives in South Carolina with her true love, Brian, and their three children. Her first book, Covert Justice, won the 2016 Selah Award for Mystery/Suspense and the 2016 Carol Award for Short Novel. Her second book, Hidden Legacy, released June 2017. She begins a new series, Dive Team Investigations with Beneath The Surfacein March of 2018.

SPECIAL TOPIC

I had to laugh when I first read this quote. Coming from the South and living in a small town with no fewer than four BBQ joints, I felt that a common love of a beloved meat, either pulled or sliced, could indeed be the start of a wonderful relationship. My husband and I have been a couple for 38 years — 5 dating and 33 married. While we are still just as opposite as the day we met, we do share a love for any kind of smoked meat, with pork at the top of the list. My husband is an outdoors kind of guy. He loves working in the yard, hiking, biking, kayaking . . . you get the picture. Me? Not so much. I am a typical bookworm. My preferred outdoor activity is sitting by the pool with a good book. But we’ve made it work. Yes, our love of smoked pork adds to our married bliss, but it is really our shared love of God and family and our shared values of honesty, integrity, and respect for others, that keep us together. The whole BBQ experience is only the vehicle for relaxed and open conversation. Between the sauce and the meat, we talk about our day, solve all the world’s ills 😉 , and grow closer and closer. So while Leigh and Ryan, may not be able to build a firm foundation only on smoked pork, it is a fine start. Now they just need to agree on the sauce — spicy or sweet, mustard or vinegar-based. Well, they (and we) may just have to agree to be opposites!

Part of my husband’s lunch yesterday. LOL!

My Impressions:

Lynn H. Blackburn is a new author for me. But with the fast-paced twists and turns I found in Beneath The Surface, she has moved to the top of my must-read list for romantic suspense. The great characters, an interesting plot foundation, and a keep-you-guessing story line make this book a recommended read.

The novel starts out strong with a dive team based in a town in North Carolina. The team made up of people across law enforcement finds a body in a routine training exercise. The investigation is hindered by the circumstances and condition of the body, but this team is professional and determined to get their man or woman. Swept up in the investigation is nurse practitioner Leigh Weston. As the danger increases to Leigh, so does the attraction between her and childhood friend Ryan Parker. They need to get the case solved fast — so they can get back to normal life and pursue a relationship!

Blackburn builds an ensemble cast in this first book in the Dive Team Investigations series. While the story revolves around the investigation of the body found in the lake and the romance between Leigh and Ryan, the other members of the team are integral parts of the action and great supporting characters that will get their own stories in coming books. Leigh and Ryan are relatable characters with doubts and struggles common to all. Their belief in God is strengthened as they face the dangers and a case that creates more questions than answers. And the case is a tricky one — the threats come fast and furious! A real puzzler, it combines the day to day grind of police work with the addition of high tech help. Because of Leigh’s work in the ER, Beneath The Surface also has a medical drama vibe that adds to the action and suspense.

My book club is reading Beneath The Surface later this year. I cannot wait to introduce my group to a this book that promises more great reading to come!

Recommended.
