First Line Friday — Light from Distant Stars

12 Jul

Happy Friday! This week I am featuring a new to me author, Shawn Smucker. I have heard fabulous things about him and his books, so I was excited when Light from Distant Stars showed up at my house a few weeks ago. Have you read this book or any of his others? I’d love to know what you thought. I’d also love if you would leave a comment with your own first line. When you are done, make sure to head to Hoarding Books, the genesis of all first line fun!

When Cohen Marah steps over his father’s body in the basement embalming room of the family’s funeral home, he has no idea that he is stepping into a labyrinth of memory. As the last one to see his father, Cohen is the primary suspect.

Over the next week, Cohen’s childhood memories come back in living color. The dramatic events that led to his father being asked to leave his pastoral position. The game of baseball that somehow kept them together. And the two children in the forest who became his friends–and enlisted him in a dark and dangerous undertaking. As the lines blur between what was real and what was imaginary, Cohen is faced with the question he’s been avoiding: Did he kill his father?

Shawn Smucker is an author and co-writer who lives in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He followed up his award-winning novel, The Day The Angels Fell, with the sequel, The Edge of Over There. You can find out more about him at his website: http://shawnsmucker.com.

I’ve heard such good things about this book!

    Happy Friday!

Today on my blog I’m sharing the first couple of lines from No Greater Love by Gina Holder. It’s a really good book! I’m currently on chapter 25, so I’ll share the first line from there.

“If his sister fluffed his pillow one more time, Hamilton was going to lose his last shred of sanity.”

Hope you have an excellent weekend. 😀❤📚

My first line is from The Express Bride by Kim Woodhouse:
    Prologue:
    St. Louis, March 1834
With shaking limbs, she climbed into the plush carriage awaiting her, the precious bundle in her arms worth far more than the money, trinkets and trunks of clothing she left behind.
Wonderful book. Check out the whole series of The Daughters of the Mayflower.

I am still reading the same book as last week, Hello Again by Heather Tullis. I am currently on chapter 29 so I will share that first line here: “In the morning as Piper got ready for work she glanced out the window and noticed Spencer’s carpool ride was pulling up to the building. I hope you have a nice weekend!

Happy Friday! This is going to be my first by this author as well. I’m sharing from The Crossing at Cypress Creek by Pam Hillman on my blog today. I’m only a few pages in, and this is my favorite line so far:

“Her stomach did a slow roll at the unexpected lilt of an Irish brogue.”
