First Line Friday — A Wreath of Snow

15 Dec

This week the folks at Hoarding Books have prompted bloggers to share a line related to travel or winter. I have a book that not only meets both of those criteria, but also Christmas! Win-win-win! The book is A Wreath of Snow by one of my favorites, Liz Curtis Higgs. This Victorian novella has its heroine traveling by train on Christmas Eve. You can read my review HERE.

Join in on the fun by sharing your first line in the comments and then heading over to Hoarding Books to discover other participating bloggers. Happy Friday!

Christmas Eve 1894

All Margaret Campbell wants for Christmas is a safe journey home. When her plans for a festive holiday with her family in Stirling crumble beneath the weight of her brother’s bitterness, the young schoolteacher wants nothing more than to return to the students she loves and the town house she calls home.

Then an unexpected detour places her in the path of Gordon Shaw, a handsome newspaperman from Glasgow, who struggles under a burden of remorse and shame.

When the secret of their shared history is revealed, will it leave them tangled in a knot of regret? Or might their past hold the threads that will bind their future together?

As warm as a woolen scarf on a cold winter’s eve, A Wreath of Snow is a tender story of love and forgiveness, wrapped in a celebration of all things Scottish, all things Victorian, and, especially, all things Christmas.

What’s your first line?

Brrrrrrrr! That does not sound comfortable!

I’m sharing the first line from The House on Foster Hill by Jaime Jo Wright on my blog today, but at the moment, I’m reading ‘Beneath the Blackberry Moon’ by April Gardiner, so I’m going to share the first few lines of that here:

“From inside the cool, shadowy wood, Totka Lawe squinted into a bright meadow. Its broad sea of undulating bromegrass lay empty. Deceptive.”

Great first line! Also, I have got to read Wright’s book! I think it will be a surprise selection for my book club. 😉 . Thanks for sharing!

    “She changed her mind.”

Yay! And as for your first line, it is her prerogative! 🙂

Yes, it is. It also makes for a great intro to the story!

On my blog I have a winter themed First Line Friday post from Mending Christmas. But here I’ll cheat and post from the book I just finished.

My first line is from Then Came You by Becky Wade.
    Sylvie left me today.

I love the cover! The story sounds interesting, too. I’m featuring At Your Request by Jen Turano on my blog. Here I will share the first line from The Boy and the Clock by A. Lynn Bassett. This is a children’s book. “Tick-tock, tick-tock. Only three minutes stood between Charlie Higgins and the best summer ever!”

    • rbclibrary December 15, 2017 at 9:49 am #

That line brought a smile to my face! Thanks for sharing!

    Happy Friday!

My FLF is from Candy Lane Christmas by Jackie Castle
CANDYCE BARKLEY TOSSES the fake engagement ring, the last token of her sordid past, out the window onto the highway 35N.

    Have a great weekend!

    Gorgeous cover!

It was days like this, when the sun bounced off Lake Superior with an eye-squinting brilliance, that Bree Nicholls forgot all her qualms about living where the Snow King ruled nine months of the year. – Without a Trace by Colleen Coble

Great line, book, series, and author!!

My first few lines are from Christmas at Carnton by Tammy Alexander:
“Very nice stitching, Mrs Prescott. “
Aletta looked up, not having heard her employer’s approach. Focused on her task, she was determined to leave the factory on time that afternoon. It was a special day, after all, and Andrew would be excited. Her son needed encouragement. They both did.

Super good book as always from Tammy.
    Merry Christmas blessings everyone!

Love the name of the town. And the story definitely starts out with a bang. “groan” Sorry I couldn’t resist.

I am very intrigued by this book. I have seen a couple reviews on it, and it sounds like a fantastic read.

Today on my blog, I am sharing the first line from My Heart Belongs in Niagara Falls, New York: Adele’s Journey. I am currently on chapter 14, so I will share the first three lines from that chapter here.

“‘Are you busy?’ Adele looked up from the book lying in her lap. Uncle Osbourne stood at the threshold of the library.”

    • rbclibrary December 15, 2017 at 8:33 pm #

The answer should be “uh, yeah!”. She is reading. 😉

    Such a beautiful cover!! 🙂

I’m in-between [fiction] books at this very minute, so don’t have a first line of my current read. 😉 This week on my blog, though, I’m sharing about another adorable children’s book. 🙂 I think I’ve become addicted to those. 😉

    • rbclibrary December 15, 2017 at 8:31 pm #

Because I am “in between” children (grown kids and no grands 😉 ) my only children’s book reading nowadays is review copies. I love them.

      • Amanda Tero December 16, 2017 at 12:05 pm #

I have plenty of younger sisters and a niece and nephew now, so that’s where I get my enjoyment. 😉

That right there makes me want to head straight to the Keurig for a warm drink 🙂

The first line from the next book I’m reading is:

It was no surprise to me that I’d lost track of time.
from A Song of Home by Susie Finkbeiner

    • rbclibrary December 15, 2017 at 8:29 pm #
