June Book Club Picks

Two book clubs — Two very different books.

This month my book clubs are reading two very different books. By The Book chose Cold Shot by Dani Pettrey, a book that will be sure to please the romantic suspense junkies in the group. Page Turners went another direction with the heavy, Pulitzer Prize winning All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. Have you read either of these books? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

51OX8So3TkL._SX322_BO1,204,203,200_In college, Griffin McCray and his four best friends had their lives planned out. Griffin and Luke Gallagher would join the Baltimore PD. Declan Gray would head to the FBI and Parker Mitchell would go on to graduate school as a crime scene analyst. But then Luke vanished before graduation and their world — and friendships — crumbled.

Now Griffin is a park ranger at Gettysburg, having left life as a SWAT-team sniper when a case went bad. The job is mostly quiet — until the day he captures two relic hunters uncovering skeletal remains near Little Round Top. Griffin just wants the case to go away, but charming forensic anthropologist Finley Scott determines that the body is modern — a young social justice lawyer missing since spring — and all evidence points to the work of an expert sniper. When FBI agent Declan Gray takes over the case, past and present collide. Griffin soon realizes he’ll need to confront some of the darkest days of his life if he — and those he cares about — are going to escape a downward spiral of murder that crosses continents.

51sP4E-+9pL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge.

I have had All The Light We Cannot See in my TBR for over a year and it’s the first read I’m going to tackle for my summer reads! I liked Cold Shot a lot too – classic Pettrey suspense!

Glad to hear Cold Shot is good. I listened to the audiobook of All The Light. Not sure I could read it without regular breaks. That was one dark book — really good, but not a pleasure read, at least for me. Thanks for stopping by!

Appreciate your comments about All The Light. I’ve had it on my TBR due to a friend’s recommendation but haven’t gotten it yet.

My take is that it’s an excellent book and can see why it got the Pulitzer Prize. But it is not a hope-filled novel. You can really see the difference from books written from a Christian worldview.
