Michigan Territory, 1814 “A voyageur and a young woman swept up in a time of upheaval and dangerdiscover firsthand the high price of freedom.” The British Army has taken control of Michilimackinac Island and its fort, forcing the Americans to swear an oath of loyalty to the crown in order to retain their land. Pierre Durant is a fur trader who returns after being away from the island for years, only to find the family farm a shambles and those he cares about starving and at the mercy of British invaders. Torn between the adventurous life of fur trading and guilt over neglecting his defenseless mother, Pierre is drawn deeper into the fight against the British–and into a relationship with Angelique MacKenzie, a childhood friend who’s grown into a beautiful woman. She now finds herself trapped by the circumstances of war and poverty, and the cruelty of her guardian, Ebenezer Whiley. As tensions mount and the violence rages on, Pierre and Angelique must decide where their loyalties rest and how much they’ll risk for love.
Jody Hedlund is the bestselling author of nine novels, including Captured By Love, Rebellious Heart, and A Noble Groom, winner of the 2014 Carol Award and INSPYs Award. She received a bachelor’s from Taylor University and a master’s from University of Wisconsin, both in social work. Currently she makes her home in Midland, Michigan, with her husband and five busy children.
Captured by Love, the Inspy shortlist nominee by Jody Hedlund, took me to unknown territory in its portrayal of love backed by an untamed Michigan during the War of 1812. This historical romance is full of danger, intrigue and thwarted love — definite plusses for fans of the genre.
Angelique hides her beauty under the grime of the chicken house and fishing boat in order to avoid the fate of her late mother and sister. Treated only as a servant by her stepfather, she struggles to survive the harsh realities of a British occupied territory. Pierre is a trapper, a voyageur, determined to overcome his past mistakes. But he plays a dangerous game in befriending both the British and the Americans.
The War of 1812 was relatively unknown to me before reading Captured by Love. Just a blip in my history classes, Hedlund brought to life the struggles of a new nation and the mixed loyalties of its citizens. This historical detail and the strong romantic storyline featuring engaging characters are sure to appeal to those who love historical romance.
A quick and entertaining read, I recommend Captured by Love.
Audience: older teens to adults.
