Book Review: Scraps of Evidence

21 Feb

752780Tess has taken some ribbing from her fellow officer, Logan, for her quilting hobby. He finds it hard to align the brisk professional officer he patrols with during the day with the one who quilts in her off-time. Besides, he’s been trying to get to know her better and he’d like to be seeing her during those few nights a week she spends with her quilting guild. Then one afternoon Tess and Logan visit her aunt in the nursing home, and the woman acts agitated when Tess covers her with the story quilt. Aunt Susan is attempting to communicate a message to them about Tess’s uncle. There’s a story behind this quilt, they realize, one that may lead them to a serial killer. Will they have a chance to have a future together, or will the killer choose Tess for his next victim before they find him?

My Impressions:

A picturesque setting, a puzzling mystery and a sweet romance all combine in Barbara Cameron’s newest novel, Scraps of Evidence, a standalone in the Quilts of Love series. This book is a good choice if you are looking for a quick read to warm your cold nights.

Tess is a new detective with a new partner. The St. Augustine, Florida native, loves her city, but a serial killer has marred its charm and Tess’ past. When Tess and Logan are called to attend a murder scene, the old memories bring the realization that the killer is back. Tess, also a quilter, may find the clues she needs in a memory quilt owned by her aunt.

I figured out early just whodunit, but that did not mar my enjoyment. The romance between Tess and Logan really takes center stage, and that was okay with me. I loved the exploration of America’s oldest city as Tess and Logan travel through the streets to find the killer. They take time for ocean sails and long dinners and picnics too. The only problem I found with the book was the lack of explanation for the motivation of the killer. I would have liked a bit more examination of the murders themselves. The faith message is that God is in control, no matter the plans of man. Through interactions with Tess, Logan grows in his faith.

Scraps of Evidence is recommended for those who like a little mystery with their romance.

Recommended.
