Book Review: Unexpected Christmas Hero

15 Nov

Never expecting to be homeless, Josie Meyers and her children are shocked when circumstances force them to live on the streets. Rick, a down-and-out disabled vet, befriends them, reawakening memories of a faith Josie had in childhood. But can she reconcile her once-held beliefs with her current situation? Will she and her children even survive long enough to try to rekindle Josie’s faith?

My Impressions:

Kathi Macias has a talent for taking tough issues such as human trafficking and illegal immigration and putting a human face on it to touch a reader’s heart. In Unexpected Christmas Hero, Macias tackles homelessness. The Meyers family is in the midst of an unbelievable situation. A young mother and her 2 children find themselves homeless. What was once an idyllic life has become a nightmare of survival. Josie has lost her mother, husband and finally her home and security. Forced onto the streets due to foreclosure and overwhelmed social services, Josie fights to keep her children safe despite their endless search for food and shelter. But Josie soon learns that there are people who care for her, even those who have so little. And maybe God can be counted on to care as well.

The desperation of the homeless is brought to life within the pages of Unexpected Christmas Hero. My heart broke for this fictional family because of my realization that this is real life for so many. This is a book to open your eyes and heart to the needs of others. It is especially a must read for this holiday season. I find myself going back over the plight of the Meyers family and wondering what my response would be and what it will be to those who are really experiencing homelessness. And the faith and service of the people of God are a reminder of what it really means to love your neighbor.

If you can read only one Christmas novel this year, make it Unexpected Christmas Hero. You will be glad you did.

Highly Recommended.
