Book Review: With Every Letter

13 Sep

Lt. Mellie Blake is looking forward to beginning her training as a flight nurse. She is not looking forward to writing a letter to a man she’s never met–even if it is anonymous and part of a morale-building program. Lt. Tom MacGilliver, an officer stationed in North Africa, welcomes the idea of an anonymous correspondence–he’s been trying to escape his infamous name for years.

As their letters crisscross the Atlantic, Tom and Mellie develop a unique friendship despite not knowing the other’s true identity. When both are transferred to Algeria, the two are poised to meet face-to-face for the first time. Will they overcome their fears and reveal who they are, or will their future be held hostage by their pasts?

Combining a flair for romance with excellent research and attention to detail, Sarah Sundin vividly brings to life the perilous challenges of WWII aviation, nursing–and true love.

Sarah Sundin is the author of the Wings of Glory series (A Distant MelodyA Memory Between Us, and Blue Skies Tomorrow). In 2011, A Memory Between Us was a finalist in the Inspirational Reader’s Choice Awards, and Sarah received the Writer of the Year Award at the Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference. Her latest release, With Every Letter, is the first in the new Wings of Nightingale series.

A graduate of UC San Francisco School of Pharmacy, she works on-call as a hospital pharmacist. During WWII, her grandfather served as a pharmacist’s mate (medic) in the Navy and her great-uncle flew with the US Eighth Air Force in England. Sarah lives in California with her husband and three children.

My Impressions:

It has been a few months since I have read an historical novel; I have been really busy with contemporaries and suspense fiction. So I started With Every Letter with some anticipation — other books I have read by Sarah Sundin offered great reading. Well, she didn’t let me down! With Every Letter is a great book, and I eagerly look forward to others in the Wings of The Nightingale series.

Lt. Mellie Blake is ready for an adventure and a chance of a lifetime when she is chosen to become one of the first flight nurses during WWII. Only problem is, she doesn’t know how to make friends; and that seems to be a requirement for the job. Lt. Tom MacGilliver is the life of the party, but can’t reveal his real side to himself or others. Both characters are trapped by their upbringing and the impressions of others. When they are matched in an anonymous letter writing program, both can open up without fear of rejection. But when their platonic-only friendship develops into much more, they have to risk it all in order to have a lasting relationship.

The Greatest Generation comes to life as the characters risk their lives for their country in Northern Africa and Sicily. The dedication and determination that characterized the men and women of WWII are faithfully captured by Sarah Sundin’s pen. Her characters seem very real — the innocence, optimism, grit and sense of honor and duty come across loud and clear. And the struggles they face with identity and fitting in are real across the generations. I also enjoyed the setting of the story. I knew little about the North African theater, and Sundin created some very vivid scenes. If you like a good romance, you will also love With Every Letter.

Highly Recommended.
