From Susan:

I love the heroes of World War 2, and I’ve always been a fan of epic stories of courage, sacrifice, and redemption. So…I was overjoyed when a publisher came to me and asked me to write an epic WW2 story. Are you kidding me? YES!!! Right about that time, I had spent three hours on a plane with this lovely Greek man who was a bit afraid of flying…so he told me his life story (instead of looking out the window!). Yep…he stirred a story in my heart. I’m so excited for this novel about two Greek brothers who come to America hoping to escape their past only to discover that God has an amazing future waiting for them.

My Impressions:

From the beautiful islands of Greece to the violence filled streets of Jazz age Chicago to the beach at Normandy and back again to Nazi occupied Greece, Sons of Thunder is a not-to-be-put-down suspense filled story.   The story is told through the eyes of two brothers, Markos and Dino, and Sophia, the woman they both love.  These three characters are driven by shame, guilt, fear and the desperate urge to survive. Yet the faithfulness of God is seen through the unfolding events of their lives.  Warren does a great job of depicting the hopelessness of doing it on our own, while reminding us of our desperate need for God.

The words of Psalm 103 reverberate through the book’s pages:   Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies . . . .

I really liked this book.  There was no preachiness; no hit you over the head with the gospel approach.  Sons of Thunder is filled with heart breaking and sometimes violent images.  But Warren delivers a message of God’s love and grace in a quiet way that speaks louder than the evil and violence of the world.

Highly Recommended
